THE CIRCULAR FASHION MOVEMENT

We’re designing out waste and pollution, keeping product and materials in use, integrating them back into our supply chain and closing the loop.

10-1

Production Positive

We’re diverting 10 times what we produce. Meaning that for every single pair of socks we’ve produced, we’re saving 10 pairs from going to landfill.

The
Problem

Australians purchase 27kg of new textiles each year and then discard around 23kg into landfill–annually.

Approximately a third of all the garments produced around the world never leave the shop floor. But where do they all end up? Globally, 87% of all disposed textiles are sent to landfill or incinerated; 12% is mechanically recycled by cutting it or shredding it into fibre, insulation material or rags; and less than 1% is chemically recycled back to reusable raw materials. The effects that textiles have on the planet prove that the linear economy model of take, make and dispose is completely unsustainable.

The
Solution

Ditch the linear fashion model and introduce a circular fashion model to truly create a sustainable fashion industry.

The onus is on brands to develop and implement sustainable practices that enable them to take ownership of their own product life-cycle. As an industry, we not only need to be more concerned with our supply chain but also with the post-consumer waste of our products. Textile waste needs radical intervention now. We’re all accountable, we all have a role to play and we should all be learning together. It’s time to stand up for future generations. Together, we can make the textile industry a leader in sustainability.

Our Up
Philosophy

Together with visionary partners we create opportunities to upuse, upsell and uplift the value of textiles.

Working with industry and consumers, we make upcycling easy and rewarding for everyone. As the major hub for textile upcycling in Australia, we give textiles a new life, provide quality clothes to Australian charities and drive innovative product development. Our philosophy is reuse where possible, then upcycle when necessary. This way we’re ensuring that minimal resources are being used to achieve our goals of circularity. We have a lot of work to do and we don’t have all the answers, but we’re constantly working to build a coalition of visionaries who share our passion to eradicate the textile landfill and foster a sustainable fashion industry and circular economy.

Gases Prevented
For every single kilogram you send to us you will prevent 3 – 4 kg of greenhouse gasses from polluting our atmosphere. That ought to help you breathe a little easier (literally!).

What happens to the textiles we receive?

Once we receive your box of textiles they go through a sorting process which is broken down into the three categories below.

All items that are in a fit for wear condition are passed onto some of Australia’s top charitable organisations to ensure they are available for those who need them most.

During our sorting process we can quickly identify an item that can easily be repurposed and upcycled into something else. We have teamed up with some awesome Aussie brands that will be turning old worn jeans into brand new denim pieces of clothing.

Incoming unbearable textiles are sorted by type of material and colour. Colour sorting results in a fabric that does not need to be re-dyed which in turn saves energy and avoids pollutants.

Textiles will then be shredded, sometimes introducing other fibres into the yarn depending on the end of use of the yarn.

However some shredded fibres are not spun into yarn but are compressed for textile filling for mattresses, pet beds, home insulation.. the list goes on.

We’re working towards becoming a more
sustainable and ethical company.

Ethical Fashion

From start to end, we manufacture our products ethically ensuring that workers have reasonable hours of work, payment of a living wage and safe and healthy working conditions.

What Happens
to textiles in landfill?

When fabrics go to the landfill, they cannot decompose, releasing approximately 3-4 times their mass in methane. Some are also subject to incineration and pollution from this method of waste disposal is unfathomably high.

Our Materials

We're on a journey towards a more sustainable approach to our production. We've made a commitment to introduce more product with a recycled cotton composition. Our men’s underwear is made from 100% combed cotton with a 100% recycled poly-over-spandex elastic waistband. Our tissue paper is made from 100% recycled wood pulp. In addition, our packaging and the tags on our products are FSC certified and 100% recyclable.
