The Australian Open, one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world, not only showcases top-notch athleticism but also provides a platform for innovative activations that go beyond the courts. This year, in collaboration with Investa and Intrepid Travel, a ground-breaking sustainability initiative took shape at 567 Collins St, Melbourne. The UPtex activation not only celebrated the spirit of the game but also championed environmental consciousness and community engagement.
Signage made from 100% recycled materials
This stunning display was built using our revolutionary recycled material, UPtex. The panels you see are made entirely from textile waste recovered and recycled by UPPAREL. The distinct blue hue comes from the use of predominantly denim material in this batch. Not only is it recycled, but it’s also totally recyclable! So once the activation wrapped up, the UPtex panels were returned to UPPAREL for further recycling.
Creating a Space for the Community
The custom Australian Open Viewing Lounge at 567 Collins St became more than just a space to catch the matches. It transformed into a vibrant hub where teams and offices from the building congregated, fostering a sense of community spirit. Table tennis matches added an extra layer of fun and camaraderie, bringing people together in the spirit of friendly competition. Nothing beats kicking some butt on the table while watchingÂ
Promoting Sustainability Through Recycling
One of the standout features of the UPtex activation was its commitment to sustainability. The lounge doubled as a drop-off recycling point for staff uniforms, ensuring that corporate clothing found a second life through secure recycling processes. This initiative not only maintained brand security but also significantly contributed to reducing textile waste, embodying the principles of the circular economy.
Empowering Change Beyond the Event
The impact of the UPtex activation extended far beyond the confines of the Australian Open. Intrepid Travel’s Melbourne team spearheaded a separate collection effort, gathering 15 boxes of old merchandise and uniforms. These items were destined for recycling by UPPAREL, further amplifying the message of sustainability and responsible consumption.
Educating and Inspiring Action
Beyond serving as a recycling point, the UPtex activation also served as an educational platform. Through interactive displays and informational materials, visitors learned about the environmental impact of textile waste and the importance of recycling. By raising awareness and inspiring action, the initiative empowered individuals to make conscious choices that benefit both the planet and future generations.

Fostering Collaborative Partnerships
The success of the UPtex activation was a testament to the power of collaboration. By bringing together Investa, Intrepid Travel, and other stakeholders, the initiative showcased the potential for collective action in driving positive change. Collaborative partnerships like these are essential in tackling complex sustainability challenges and fostering a culture of innovation and responsibility.
The UPtex activation at the Australian Open served as a shining example of how sporting events can be more than just competitions—they can be catalysts for meaningful change. By combining entertainment, community engagement, and sustainability, the initiative demonstrated the potential for sports to inspire action and drive progress towards a more sustainable future. As we look ahead, let us continue to harness the power of collaboration and creativity to create a lasting impact on and off the court.
